Nota biográfica

Maria Helena Brito is a Full Professor at the NOVA School of Law. She was born in Vila do Conde, Portugal, in 1948. She has a degree in Law from Coimbra University Law School (1970). She began her academic career at Lisbon University Faculty of Law (school year 1978-1979), where she obtained her Master’s Degree (1985) and her PhD (1998). Since 1999 she has been a Professor at the NOVA School of Law. She obtained her law degree in Private Law, with specialization in International Private Law at the NOVA University, Lisbon (2016). At NOVA School of Law she was Coordinator of the Second Cycle of Studies (2007 to 2014). She was a member of the Faculty Council (elected by the Scientific Council in 2009 and in 2013, until September 2018), member of the Pedagogical Council (elected by the Scientific Council in 2013, until September 2018), member of the Commission of Quality in Education (from 2011 until October 2014), member of the Self-Assessment Commission (from 2013 until October 2014). She was a Judge of the Constitutional Court between March 1998 and April 2007. She carried out technical functions at the Public Administration, in the Ministries of Justice (Office of European Law), and Foreign Affairs (Directorate General of the European Communities). She was a legal advisor at Banco de Portugal, in the Legal Services Department (between January 1989 and April 2008, a position suspended during her term as a judge at the Constitutional Court), with management functions at the Banking Supervision Department, between April 2008 and December 2010, and at the Investigation and Sanction Action Department, between January 2011 and September 30, 2013 (the date on which she retired from the Banco de Portugal).

Maria Helena Brito é Professora Catedrática Jubilada da NOVA School of Law. Nasceu em Vila do Conde, Portugal, em 1948.

É licenciada em Direito pela Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra (1970). Iniciou a carreira académica na Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa (ano letivo de 1978-1979), tendo aí realizado o mestrado (1985) e o doutoramento (1998). Desde 1999 é Professora da NOVA School of Law. Na Universidade NOVA de Lisboa obteve o título de agregada em Direito – Direito Privado, especialidade de Direito Internacional Privado (2016).

Na NOVA School of Law exerceu as funções de Coordenadora do Segundo Ciclo de Estudos (2007 a 2014). Foi membro do Conselho da Faculdade (eleita pelo Conselho Científico, em 2009 e em 2013, até setembro de 2018), membro do Conselho Pedagógico (eleita pelo Conselho Científico, em 2013, até setembro de 2018), membro da Comissão de Qualidade no Ensino (desde 2011 até outubro de 2014), membro da Comissão de Auto-Avaliação (desde 2013 até outubro de 2014).

Foi Juíza do Tribunal Constitucional entre março de 1998 e abril de 2007.

Desempenhou funções técnicas na Administração Pública, nos Ministérios da Justiça (Gabinete de Direito Europeu) e dos Negócios Estrangeiros (Direção-Geral das Comunidades Europeias).

Foi consultora jurídica no Banco de Portugal, no Departamento de Serviços Jurídicos (entre janeiro de 1989 e abril de 2008, cargo suspenso durante o mandato como Juíza do Tribunal Constitucional), com funções de direção no Departamento de Supervisão Bancária, entre abril de 2008 e dezembro de 2010, e no Departamento de Averiguação e Ação Sancionatória, entre janeiro de 2011 e 30 de setembro de 2013 (data em que passou à situação de reforma no Banco de Portugal).
