All the researchers of the Research Group are PhDs and university lecturers. The academic training and experience of its members reflects the privileges of multidisciplinarity: Law, Anthropology, Political Science, International Relations and Security, History. Depending on the subject, research will be carried out by sub-groups and/or individual researchers specialised in each area.
Armando Marques Guedes will be the coordinator of the research group. The central objective is to promote collaboration between researchers, thus allowing the exchange of methodologies, problems and discoveries, as well as the effectiveness and impact of the results.
In all the subjects under analysis, depending on the theme, other specialists may be called upon to complement the work to be developed by this group in its various facets.
Each semester, a general meeting of the group will be organised to present results achieved, discuss strategies and develop future systematisations.
The CEDIS research group on Law, Lusophony and Interculturalism is not alone in an expanding field either in Portugal or abroad – including in this list most of the Lusophone countries, namely Brazil, Timor-Leste and Angola. Cooperation with some of these countries (for example, with Angola, Mozambique, East Timor and Brazil) will involve joint actions and, eventually, co-publications. In addition, a less formalized cooperation will also include commentaries on the various Lusophone constitutional formats and their respective legislative bodies, mainly in the area of public law but also, for example, in real rights.
In Portugal, there is already a strong collaboration with academic, military and state institutions, in relation to matters within the scope of work of this group; this has already led to (and will continue to lead to, this time with greater intensity and regularity) the holding of joint courses, participation in mutually organised conferences as well as publications and, in some cases, through the joint authorship of articles and collections by CEDIS researchers and members of these institutions.
Another format of work already being developed and which this group intends to grow is the collaboration in dissertations leading to the award of academic degrees, both with other institutions in Portugal and abroad, through participation in juries and also the joint supervision of research projects already underway in matters of common interest with the scope of work of the group. As an example, Professor Armando Marques Guedes is currently supervising (or co-supervising) four PhD theses in this composite format. A few areas can already be highlighted as examples of what is already being done (but is intended to continue to be developed) in this area: constitutionalism, forms of government, history and areas of socio-anthropological and political science/international politics (such as foreign policies and security matters).
Although essentially a continuation of the project previously developed on Africa and Lusophone Countries by the present CEDIS team, the scope of this new project for the years 2015-2020 aims to reach further, covering the complex interface between law, politics and socio-historical matters concerning Lusophone groups present in four continents. Added to this is an intensification of the already strong cooperation with research works, as well as R&D institutions and universities on five continents.
In view of this, the indicators listed below are merely indicative and conservative in their minimalism, since these results do not depend solely on the work of the research team. Therefore, only those actions and activities are listed for which the group has a high degree of confidence that they will take place:
