10 and 11 July 2025 at NOVA School of Law
Deadline for abstract submission: 31 March 2025
The main objective of this annual conference is to create a forum where scholars, practitioners, non-governmental organizations, cooperative and social sector, and state agencies with an interest in insurance will meet and discuss topics that are of interest to all, with a focus on public policy recommendations on the role of insurance in fostering sustainable development goals.
We aim to contribute to the generation of knowledge and raise awareness as to the role of insurance for the equal enjoyment of human rights and the achievement of SDGs, in line with the core values of the European Union.
In 2025, this annual conference will be devoted to SDG 1: No poverty. Insurance has immense potential in the fight to eradicate poverty. By its very nature, the sector has always played a key role in offering financial protection against the adverse impact of unforeseen events such as illness, accidents, natural or man-made disasters. Accessibility to insurance allows the most vulnerable populations to maintain minimum levels of subsistence and avoid falling into cycles of poverty. However, the obstacles to full access to insurance must be identified. Legal, economic, social or geographical barriers still limit access to insurance products. Strengthening public policies and creating legal frameworks that encourage the supply of and access to insurance can be effective solutions for extending this financial protection, making a significant contribution to reducing global poverty. Insurance can be an essential tool in protecting the populations most exposed to the economic and financial impact of climate change, but it can also encourage resilience and adaptation practices, contributing to a society that is better prepared to face climate challenges. We also welcome interventions that explore the links between this noble goal and other SDGs, notably SDG 13 –Climate action, SDG 14 – Life below water, SDG 15 – Life on land, and SDG 16 – Peace, justice and strong institutions.
