War & Law: The Future of Conflict

War is a chameleon, Clausewitz told us. It may change colour, but it is constant in essence. Motivations, technological changes, and tactical or strategic innovations do not change the nature of war – the form that war takes is constantly evolving. War is, therefore, a phenomenon in itself. In this regard, the legal or geopolitical dimensions of warfare are just one of the many aspects that comprise the state of war. These, naturally, undergo processes of mutation and adaptation.

Against this background, the conference aims to address current trends in armed conflicts, taking into consideration four axes of analysis that can help us understand the future of war and how Law is involved in the process. These key areas of digital technologiesclimate change and resource competition, privatization of conflict and identities and violent extremism, are some of the many reasons that can lead to war in the future.

The conference will involve participation of members of the Government and the armed forces, academics and international experts.

This conference is organized by Felipe Pathé Duarte and Laura Ínigo Alvarez within the framework of the 50th year anniversary of NOVA University Lisbon with the support of FCTCEDIS and Jurisnova.
