In accordance to art. 8 of the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology, with the financial support of the FCT/MCTES through national funds (PIDDAC), and within the scope of Projeto de R&D “IN_SOLVENS: Direito da Insolvência em Portugal – uma análise multidisciplinar” (Ref. PTDC/DIR-OUT/2939/2020), a call for applications is hereby launched for 1 (one) Research Initiation Scholarship (BII), for undergraduate students, to collaborate in the mentioned research project, hosted by CEDIS, Centre for R & D on Law and Society (UI0714), of the New University of Lisbon – NOVA School of Law, coordinated by Professora Doutora Mariana França Gouveia.

Duration: The scholarship lasts for 6 months. The scholarship amount is 541, 12€ (five hundred and fourty one euros and twelve cents)(https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_2023.pdf), with monthly payment by bank transfer.

Object, Objective and Activities: Collaboration in the research project “IN_SOLVENS: Direito da Insolvência em Portugal – uma análise multidisciplinar”. The aim of the project is to identify the causes and effects of the long duration of insolvency proceedings and the reduced use of pre-insolvency mechanisms in Portugal. The collaboration of the scholarship holder will focus on one of the research strands of the project, under the scope of which a qualitative analysis of court decisions issued in insolvency and pre-insolvency proceedings (PER and PEAP) will be developed. In this context, the activities to be developed by the grant holder are aimed at preparing the material for content analysis and argumentative analysis, which includes, namely, the processing and treatment of the data, as well as their coding and revision.

Admission requirements and assessment parameters:
    Admission requirements
a) To be enrolled in an undergraduate degree course in Law;
b) To have successfully completed the subject of Declarative Civil Procedure Law;
c) Certificate of qualifications.
    Evaluation parameters
a) Graduation average up to the present moment, which must be indicated (35%);
b) Relevance and suitability of the previous career for the activities to be developed within the scope of the project, as shown in the curriculum vitae (40%). Among other aspects, knowledge in relation to socio-legal research methods and legal discourse analysis, marks obtained in the disciplines of Theory of Procedure and Declarative Civil Procedure Law, experience or training in qualitative data analysis using specialised software (CAQDAS) and texts, articles or other publications will be valued;
c) Letter of intent (maximum: 2 pages) in which you explain the reasons that lead you to apply and the expectations about the importance of the participation in the project in the construction of your professional and academic career, including reference to your research interests (25%).

Publicity and deadline for submission of applications:The present Call for Applications is published in the website and facilities of NOVA School of Law and in the CEDIS website, as well as in the EURAXESS Portal, for a minimum period of 10 working days from the date of this publication. Applications may be submitted from 10 of April and the deadline for submission ends on the 24 of April.

Selection:The selection of candidates will be made by a jury composed of the Project Coordinator Professor Mariana França Gouveia, who will be presiding, Professor Jorge Morais Carvalho and Professor João Pedro Pinto-Ferreira, based on curricular assessment. If the jury deems it necessary, interviews may be held with the candidates.

Hearing of interested parties: Pursuant to article 124, no. 1, al. a) of the Code of Administrative Procedure, this competition does not require a hearing with interested parties due to the urgency of the decision to select the scholarship holder.

Form of publication/notification of results:The final results of the evaluation will be published through an alphabetically ordered list, posted in a visible and public place at the NOVA School of Law and on the CEDIS website, and candidates will be notified by e- mail.

Formalization of applications:Applications should be submitted on time and be accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae, proof of registration at Nova School of Law and a copy of the history of grades and letter of intent, as well as the application to the e-mail concurso.bolsas@cedis.fd.unl.pt, with the subject “Research Initiation Grant (BII) No. 1/2023”. The curriculum vitae should be organized according to the admission requirements and evaluation parameters described in this notice.

Model contract, final reports and evalution criteria: The model grant contract to be adopted is provided in Annex I. Annexes II and III are models of final reports to be submitted by the grant holder and the scientific advisor respectively, under the terms of the contract. The criteria for evaluating the grantee by the scientific advisor will be compliance with the plan of activities attached to the contract. The contracting will be subject to the effective availability of  unding under this project and is scheduled for May 2023.

It is the duty of the scholarship holder to punctually comply with the guidelines established by the scientific advisor, to communicate to the Foundation for Science and Technology the occurrence of any fact that justifies the suspension of the scholarship and the timely preparation of a semi-annual and final report on the assessment of the program of activities developed with the grant awarded. The fulfillment of the work plan, except for justified exceptions, takes place in the premises of CEDIS and/or the Faculty of Law of the UNL.
