Research grant for a PhD student

Call

A call for applications is open for a research grant for a PhD student under the CIDRA project – Creating a joint Infrastructure for Dialogue, Research and Advocacy between Europe and Africa, funded by the European Union, under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area: International and European Law

2. Admission requirements:
– To be enrolled in a PhD programme in Law
– Hold a Master’s degree
– Be fluent in Portuguese and English
– Experience in managing European projects

3. Other requirements: (requirements that can be valued)
– Applications that demonstrate a basic knowledge of reading, understanding and communicating in French will be favoured. Although the working language of the project is English, the project includes several partners from French-speaking countries and knowledge of the language contributes to effective and smooth communication.
– Authorship or co-authorship of publications, participation in scientific events and/or participation in projects on topics involving relations between the European Union and Africa will be valued, taking into account the specific scope of the project.

4. Work plan: The project aims to create an academic network for reflection, research, sharing of methodologies and advocacy to strengthen regional integration and cooperation between Africa and Europe, and to prepare a large-scale investment plan jointly designed between the EU and Africa to: a) achieve interregional energy independence; b) increase digital, transport and resource access infrastructures; c) strengthen financial resilience and entrepreneurship, and boost interregional value chains; d) manage the green transition and promote sustainable development through the adoption of ad-hoc adaptation and mitigation strategies; e) improve
education, a multifaceted cultural identity, democratic participation and legitimacy in collective decision-making, and human resource management.
The person selected will be responsible for managing the CIDRA project at Nova School of Law, in accordance with the tasks assigned to them in the approved application, in particular liaising with the project coordinator and the partners, organising and preparing the working meetings of the researchers and teachers allocated to the project and the planned events, drawing up progress reports (narrative and financial), promoting and communicating the project and monitoring quality, in accordance with the rules and procedures determined by the Funding entity and the Project Coordinator.

5. 6. Place of work: The work will be carried out at the Nova School of Law, under the scientific supervision of Professor Francisco Pereira Coutinho.

7. Duration of the grant: The grant will last for 12 months, starting on 1st January 2025. The scholarship contract may be renewed for the duration of the project assignment or for the duration of the funding.

8. Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the scholarship corresponds to €1,260.00, according to the table of values defined in Annex I of the NOVA University Lisbon Research Scholarship Regulations, approved by Order no. 9484/2023 of 14 September 2023, and payment is made monthly by bank transfer.

9. Selection methods: (define % of parameters to be assessed)
The selection methods to be used will be as follows: CV assessment, interview, with a respective 50%-50% score.
1) Curriculum evaluation: Demonstration of fulfilment of the application requirements and suitability of the curriculum to the functional profile set out in the Work Plan – value 50%
2) Interview with the best-placed candidates after analysing their CVs: Assessment of interest and motivation to carry out the proposed activities, ability to work as part of a team – value 50%

11. How the results are publicised/notified:
The final results of the assessment proposed by the jury will be notified to the candidates by email, no later than 90 working days after the deadline for submitting applications, and they will be able to access the minutes and the shortlist, and comment within 10 working days on the draft decision in the context of a prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure. At the end of the period set for the hearing of interested parties and in the absence of any response, the shortlist will become final. Candidates may lodge a complaint against the final decision within 15 working days (to the email address used for notification), or appeal to the highest executive body of the funding organisation within 30 working days of notification of the final decision, addressed to (the Directorate or CEDIS) via the email address cedis@novalaw.unl.pt.

12. Application deadline and form of submission: The call for applications will be open between 21st November and 5th December

13. Applications must be formalised by sending an email to concurso.bolsas@novalaw.unl.pt, mentioning the grant reference “Research grant no. 6/2024.” in the subject line of the email.

14. The application must consist of a single PDF file, including:
a. Motivation letter (up to two pages)
b. Detailed CV (including email address and telephone number);
c. Documents proving the academic degrees obtained and grades in all subjects taken;
(For academic degrees awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it is compulsory to present the registration of the recognition of the academic degree and the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese scale (process regulated by Decree-Law no. 341/2007, of 12th October), or alternatively, to obtain equivalence/recognition of the academic degrees (process
regulated by Decree-Law no. 283/83, of 21st June)).
d. Proof of enrolment for the current academic year as set out in point 2 of the Notice;
e. Optional letters of recommendation.
